On October 4, 2024, the managing partner of PBP Law Firm, Andrei Briceac, participated in a panel discussion organized by the Faculty of Law of the State University of Moldova (USM) in celebration of its 65th anniversary.
In the presentation titled „Lawyer in the Loop” key aspects of the legal profession were discussed, focusing on the essential roles lawyers play as advisors, advocates, mediators and defenders of justice. These roles emphasize the lawyer’s responsibility in both the market and society, particularly as ethical overseers. In connection, the discussion also addressed the definition of artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing impact on legal work, illustrating how AI can enhance efficiency in routine tasks while leaving the responsibility for complex cases and ethical guidance firmly in the hands of legal professionals.
The speech explored how lawyers can utilize AI in the following fields:
- Document Review: AI systems automate contract analysis, case law research, and document discovery, saving time;
- Legal Research: Tools like ROSS Intelligence and Casetext use AI to provide fast and relevant case precedents;
- Contract Generation: AI-driven platforms like LawGeex help in drafting and reviewing contracts with minimal human input;
- Predictive Analytics: AI systems analyze legal trends to predict case outcomes, helping attorneys prepare strategies;
- Compliance Checks: Automation of legal compliance tasks in highly regulated sectors.
Andrei Briceac provided practical examples of systems that can serve as either substitutes or assistants to lawyers such as
- Robotic Process Automation (RPA) – uses intelligent automation technologies to perform repetitive tasks of human workers, such as extracting data, filling forms moving files and more;
- ROSS Inteligence (provide precedents);
- Casetext (provide precedents);
- LawGeex (drafting and rewiewing contracts);
- Robolex;
- DoNotPay (file complaints, appeal toll tickets, claim rebates, copyright protection).
As AI transforms the legal profession, the role of lawyers becomes even more vital. Lawyers will provide human oversight, ensuring AI operates within ethical and legal boundaries, preventing bias and abuse. They’ll also play a critical role as regulators of AI, crafting and enforcing laws to keep AI use in check. While AI can manage routine tasks like data analysis and document review, human lawyers will still lead in complex legal strategy, handling nuanced cases that require judgment and creativity. Most importantly, attorneys will act as ethical guardians, protecting human rights and personal freedoms against the unchecked use of AI.
The conclusion is that AI will not compete directly with lawyers; rather, a lawyer who utilizes AI will have a competitive ad vantage over one who does not. In this context, PBP Law Firm is committed to integrating artificial intelligence into its workflows, thereby adapting to changes in the field to facilitate legal practice.
„Nor the intelligence or the strength can help one survive – only the ability to adapt!” (natural selection)
